UK E-commerce Retailer Streamlines Amazon FBA Preparation with Automatic Bagging
A UK e-commerce retailer has improved the speed and efficiency of its Amazon FBA preparation process by combining tabletop automatic bagging machines with pre-opened auto bags supplied by Severn Packaging.
Products sent into Amazon fulfilment centres must be correctly packed and carry the required Amazon barcode and SKU information. The customer previously completed this process by manually packing each product, printing a separate paper label and then applying it to the bag by hand.
The new inline solution allows the product to be packed, sealed and printed in a single process.
The Customer
The customer is a UK-based e-commerce retailer supplying a wide selection of specialist consumer products through Amazon and other online marketplaces.
The company has not been named in this case study at its request.
The Challenge
Preparing products for Amazon FBA involved several separate manual stages. Operators placed each item into a bag, sealed it and then printed and applied a paper label containing the relevant Amazon barcode and SKU number.
Although straightforward, repeating this process across higher order volumes created several inefficiencies:
- Each product required a separately printed paper label.
- Labels had to be removed from their backing paper and applied manually.
- Incorrect positioning could affect barcode readability.
- The additional handling restricted packing output.
- Label rolls and backing paper created extra consumable use and waste.
- Operators needed to manage separate packing, sealing and labelling stages.
The customer wanted to simplify the process while maintaining the accurate product identification required for its Amazon FBA operation.
The Severn Packaging Solution
Severn Packaging supplied tabletop automatic bagging machines together with compatible pre-opened auto bags.
The integrated printing system applies the Amazon barcode and SKU information directly onto the bag as part of the packing cycle. Operators can therefore load the product before the machine completes the printing and sealing processes inline.
This combines three previously separate activities:
- Packing the product.
- Sealing the bag.
- Applying the Amazon barcode and SKU information.
Direct Printing onto the Bag
Removing the separate paper label was a key benefit of the project. The required information is now printed directly onto the bag, producing a clear and consistent result without requiring an operator to handle or position a label.
Direct printing also removes the label backing paper that was previously generated during every packing run.
Improved Barcode Consistency
The printer applies the barcode in a controlled position on each bag. This improves consistency compared with manually applied labels, which can be positioned unevenly, creased or placed across an unsuitable part of the pack.
The system can produce high-quality barcodes, SKU numbers, product descriptions and other variable information required for different product lines.
Faster Amazon FBA Preparation
Pre-opened bags are presented ready for loading, removing the need for operators to open individual loose bags by hand.
Once the product is inserted, the machine prints and seals the bag. Combining these stages reduces operator handling and enables products to be prepared for Amazon more efficiently.
Flexible Tabletop Format
The compact tabletop bagging machines provide automated packing and printing without requiring a large production footprint. This makes the system well suited to e-commerce operations processing multiple SKUs and varying order volumes.
Different bag sizes and print formats can be used to accommodate the customer’s product range.
A Complete Machinery and Materials Solution
Severn Packaging supplies the customer with both the automatic bagging machines and the compatible auto bags used on the systems.
This combined approach helps ensure the film, perforations, sealing characteristics and print performance are correctly matched to the machinery. It also provides the customer with one point of contact for equipment, packaging materials, print consumables and technical support.
The Results
Paper Labels Removed from the Process
Amazon barcode and SKU information is printed directly onto the bag, removing the need to purchase, print and manually apply a separate paper label.
Fewer Manual Packing Stages
Packing, printing and sealing are completed within one process. Operators no longer need to move each product through separate bagging and labelling stages.
Faster FBA Preparation
Pre-opened bags and inline printing reduce handling time, allowing more products to be prepared for shipment into Amazon fulfilment centres.
More Consistent Barcode Placement
Controlled direct printing produces a consistent position and presentation across each batch, reducing the variability associated with manually applied labels.
Reduced Consumable Waste
Removing separate adhesive labels also eliminates the associated release liner and reduces the number of consumables required for each finished pack.

Severn Packaging Comment
“Amazon FBA preparation can involve a surprising amount of manual handling when every product has to be bagged, sealed and then labelled separately. By printing the Amazon barcode and SKU information directly onto the auto bag, we have combined these stages into one efficient process. The customer has removed the separate paper label and its backing material while improving packing speed, barcode consistency and presentation.”
