Leading UK HVAC Equipment Provider Improves Protection with Full-Width 800mm Multi-Pocket Material

A leading UK HVAC equipment provider improved the wrapping of wider products by installing a Cirrus packaging machine with a winder and switching to Green Line 800mm Multi-Pocket material.

The Customer

The customer is a leading UK provider of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment. Its warehouse handles products with varied dimensions, including wider items that require effective wrapping and cushioning before distribution.

The company has not been named in this case study at its request.

The Challenge

The customer was previously using nominally 800mm-wide inflatable protective packaging material from another supplier.

Although the uninflated material provided the required width, it contracted considerably as it was inflated. This reduced its usable working width and made it more difficult for warehouse operators to wrap wider products effectively.

The reduced coverage affected packing efficiency because operators needed to reposition the material or use additional sheets to protect larger items adequately.

The project focused on:

  • Retaining more of the material’s nominal width after inflation.
  • Improving coverage across wider HVAC products.
  • Reducing the amount of material and handling required.
  • Improving product protection during storage and transport.
  • Providing wrapping and void filling from one material.
  • Supporting the company’s sustainability goals.
  • Introducing a reliable and straightforward packaging process.

The Severn Packaging Solution

Severn Packaging reviewed the customer’s products and existing packaging process before demonstrating a Cirrus inflatable packaging machine with a winder and Green Line 800mm Multi-Pocket material.

Greater Usable Width After Inflation

The demonstration showed that the Severn Packaging material retained significantly more of its nominal 800mm width after inflation than the customer’s previous material.

Maintaining a wider working surface allows the material to cover more of each product in a single pass, making it particularly effective for the customer’s larger HVAC equipment.

800mm Multi-Pocket Material

Green Line 800mm Multi-Pocket is a hybrid protective material suitable for wrapping products, providing cushioning and filling empty space within cartons.

Its pocket configuration creates a flexible protective layer that can be wrapped around products or used to stabilise them within the outer packaging.

Cirrus Machine with Winder

The Cirrus machine inflates the material consistently before the winder collects it into manageable rolls.

Operators can prepare inflated material in advance and move the finished rolls to the required packing area. This creates a flexible workflow and ensures protective material is readily available when wider products need to be packed.

Clear Sustainability Messaging

The Green Line material is visibly green and carries clear environmental messaging. This helps the customer communicate its packaging choices to recipients while supporting its wider sustainability goals.

The Results

Improved Coverage for Wider Products

By retaining more of its nominal width after inflation, the 800mm Multi-Pocket provides better coverage across the customer’s larger HVAC products.

Increased Packing Efficiency

Operators can wrap wider products with fewer material sections and less repositioning, simplifying the packing process and reducing handling time.

Improved Product Protection

The wider usable surface helps provide more complete and consistent protection around the product, while the inflated pockets offer cushioning during handling and distribution.

One Material for Multiple Applications

Multi-Pocket can be used for wrapping, cushioning and void filling, giving the warehouse a flexible material for different products and carton configurations.

Improved Material Handling

The winder produces manageable rolls of inflated material that can be prepared in advance and positioned where required within the packing operation.

Support for Sustainability Goals

The material’s green appearance and clearly visible environmental messaging help demonstrate the customer’s commitment to more sustainable packaging.

Key Project Benefits

  • Greater usable width after inflation.
  • Improved coverage for wider HVAC products.
  • More efficient wrapping with less repositioning.
  • Improved protection during handling and distribution.
  • Hybrid wrapping, cushioning and void-fill capability.
  • Green Line 800mm Multi-Pocket material.
  • Inflated material collected into manageable rolls.
  • Flexible production using a Cirrus machine and winder.
  • Clear environmental messaging.
  • Support for the customer’s sustainability objectives.

Customer Comment

“Our previous material reduced considerably in width once inflated, which made wrapping some of our larger products difficult and inefficient. Severn Packaging demonstrated a much better solution, with the 800mm Multi-Pocket retaining more of its usable width and providing noticeably better coverage. The Cirrus machine and winder have integrated well into our operation, and the material gives us a flexible combination of wrapping, protection and void filling. Its clear environmental messaging also supports our sustainability goals.”

Severn Packaging Comment

“The important measurement in this application was not simply the material’s width before inflation, but the usable width available to the operator afterwards. By retaining more of its nominal 800mm width, our Multi-Pocket material gives the customer better coverage across larger HVAC products. Combined with the Cirrus machine and winder, it provides an efficient solution for producing material that can wrap, cushion and fill voids while supporting the customer’s sustainability objectives.”

Protective Packaging Designed Around Usable Width

The nominal width of inflatable packaging material does not always reflect the coverage available after inflation.

Severn Packaging tests materials against the customer’s actual products and packing process, helping ensure the finished cushioning provides the required width, protection and handling efficiency.
